Static & Dynamic Stretches
The classes we run are a blend of static and dynamic poses.
Static stretches
Static stretches involve holding a pose to create tension in the muscles involved and a "lengthening" sensation. This helps to alleviate any tightness in muscles. Body movements are slow and deliberate and often include repetition. This helps beginners get accustomed to the pose while at the same time focusing on relaxation and mindfulness - before attempting to hold the pose for a few breaths.
The primary goals include achieving controlled breathing and proper posture. Additionally, participants develop an awareness of unusual muscle tensions, restore muscle balance and cultivate mindful breathing.

Why stretch?
When we stretch a muscle, our body responds by increasing blood flow to that area. The blood vessels around the targeted muscle widen to allow more blood to flow through and our heart starts pumping more blood. Regular stretching helps increase our range of motion in the joints, improves blood circulation and posture. This helps to reduce muscular tension throughout the body and can reduce the risk of injury.
Dynamic stretches
The dynamic element of our classes comes into play when we transition into different poses. While static poses challenge our strength and endurance, dynamic poses teach us to synchronise our movements with our breath (and not the other way around). At times the transition between poses can be broken down into a few multiple movements to prevent us from losing the rhythm of our breath.
The overarching aim is to build upon the objectives of static stretches by integrating the rhythm of our breath and coordinating movements accordingly.
