Ida, Pinggala & Nasal Cycles
The nasal cycle is a subconscious process of alternating partial congestion and decongestion of the nasal passages in humans and other animals. Approximately every 90 minutes, one nostril becomes more dominant than the other. This natural cycle plays a vital role in balancing the nervous system and brain hemispheres, contributing to overall health and equilibrium.
In yogic philosophy, this balance relates to two subtle energy channels or nadi :

Ida Nadi (Left Channel): Linked to the left nostril and the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting cooling, calming energy.
Pingala Nadi (Right Channel): Linked to the right nostril and the sympathetic nervous system, associated with warming, stimulating energy.
How Body Position Affects Breathing
When lying on one side, the pressure on that side encourages the opposite nostril to be more open. The position you choose can influence your mental and physical state:
For calmness and relaxation (activating Ida Nadi): Lie on the right side.
For activation and alertness (activating Pingala Nadi): Lie on the left side.
For general health and digestion, lying on the left side is often recommended to enhance digestion and prevent acid reflux, though individual needs may vary.
The Nasal Cycle in Class
In our yoga classes, we guide students to begin practice lying on the right side to encourage a relaxed state by keeping the left nostril open and activating the calming Ida Nadi. From this peaceful starting point, we gradually awaken the body through pranayama (such as Kapalabhati) and joint-loosening exercises.
We also end the session on the right side, maintaining a relaxed, tranquil state after the final cooling and calming poses. This thoughtful progression supports a harmonious transition from rest to activation and back to deep relaxation, promoting balance and well-being throughout the practice.
